Several protests and disruptions started on early morning as part of the mobilisations in the general strike called for Thursday in the country to protest against the referendum trial in Madrid.

Although it was not formally called for this reason – strikes cannot be called for political reasons -, the underlying aim is to reject the proceedings underway against 12 pro-independence officials.

Dozens of roads were cut across the country, including Catalonia’s main highway, AP-7, as well as other key roads in the morning peak hour: A-2, C-60 and C-58 among others.

In Barcelona, some streets were occupied, as well as Caixabank headquarters in Girona. The access to the port of Tarragona was also blocked by protesters.

Demonstrations during strike

The strike, called by the pro-independence trade union Intersindical-CSC, will also include some protests across Catalonia, including one at noon in Barcelona’s Plaça Universitat, and another one at 6pm in Jardinets de Gràcia, in the same city.

Tarragona, Lleida, Girona and Tortosa will be among the dozens of towns hosting demonstrations against the trial on throughout Thursday.
