According to Transparency International, this year’s report makes it clear that corruption attracts funds from essential services such as health care, as countries are vulnerable and unprepared to deal with public health crises such as the 2019 coronavirus pandemic. The Berlin-based NGO also states that countries that are unable to control corruption also tend to violate human rights and democratic norms during the management of the health emergency.

In this year’s ranking, which analyzes the perception of public sector corruption in 180 countries according to experts, businesspeople and opinion surveys, Denmark and New Zealand stand out positively, receiving 88 points out of 100, while Finland, Singapore, Sweden and Switzerland follow with 85 points. Spain is in the thirty-second position with 62 points, below the European average of 66.

Two thirds of the countries are below 50 points, while the world average is 43 points. The index is closed by Venezuela, Yemen, Syria, Somalia and South Sudan, scoring below 15 points. You can read the full report here.
