In 1995, Assumpció Maresma, Vicent Partal and Joan Subirats started it by creating the Infopista, a directory of all the Catalan pages on the internet.

Over the course of the last 25 years, VilaWeb has become a multimedia information platform, working twenty-four hours a day. Its solid business model is based on the existence of nearly 19.000 paying subscribers.

In January 2014, VilaWeb launched the English edition.
