Catalan MEPs Carles Puigdemont, Clara Ponsatí and Toni Comín have sent a letter to all members of the European Parliament claiming that the attendance of Pablo Casado to a mass where Francisco Franco was honored is a “stain for the European Popular family”.

In the letter, the three MEPs demand “action” and consider that the protection of the “memory of the regime” by Spain’s Popular Party should be clearly condemned by the parties that maintain formal ties with them. “Banalizing and paying homage to fascist dictators should not be tolerated” conclude the three Catalan MEPs.
Ponsatí, Puigdemont and Comín also state that it is not only a shame, but also “a metaphor of many things that run deeply wrong in the Spanish state”. In this regard, they recommend not to forget that Spain is the only country in the European Union that “has not built its democracy on the defeat of totalitarian regimes.”
