No parade will take place to celebrate Pride Week 2020 in Barcelona, but a programme of online activities is still scheduled to mark one of the biggest weeks in the LGBTQI calendar. Despite there being no parade, a protest in the Catalan capital took place on Saturday evening under the banner “We have history, we have future: uniting the colours of all struggles.”
The 44th annual march for freedom saw over 1,000 people gather at Plaça Universitat and march down Las Ramblas and into Plaça Sant Jaume. The demonstration also called for trans rights and included a section on the fight for anti-racism as well.
In Sitges, a seaside town hugely popular for their Gay Pride festivals every June, the decision to postpone celebrations to the end of summer was already taken due to the pandemic.
Round table discussions
In Barcelona, round table discussions, art expositions, and performances from some huge names in pop are planned to be shown online. Throughout the week, various debates and webinars have already been going on, touching on topics such as LGBTQI chambers of commerce as examples of business organisations, vulnerabilities, diverse families, and sports and culture.
The round table discussions were broadcast on Barcelona’s television station Betevé, as well as Barcelona Pride’s Facebook and YouTube accounts.
Saturday evening from 10 pm saw the biggest party brought to screens, with musical shows from Bad Gyal, Agoney, Ricky Merino, Karina and many more. These concerts will be able to be viewed from the same platforms as the talks.
