Human Rights Watch has included the Catalan referendum trial in its annual human rights report of 2019. They remember the harsh conviction for “non-violent acts” in connection with the 2017 referendum. The report also recalls the statement made by the UN working group on arbitrary detention about the violation of the right of three of the defendants.

This is not the first time that Human Rights Watch refers to the situation in Catalonia. The NGO condemned the police violence against the population during the referendum and criticized the impunity of judicial investigations on the Spanish police and Civil Guard.
