The President of the Catalan Government, Artur Mas, has decided to resign in order to facilitate an agreement between the independentist parties, Junts Per Si and CUP, in order to advance in the process towards independence.

The new Catalan president will be Carles Puigdemont, mayor of Girona and president of the Associació de Municipis Independentistes (Association of Independentists Towns). Artur mas has made this decision personally. Carles Puigdemont is one of the youngest members of the CDC, Mas’ party, to have public responsibilities and belongs to the party’s social democratic wing. He is also a strong supporter of the independentist movement.

In exchange CUP will make the members of its party that are deputies and that have so far hindered the agreement resign from the parliament.

This agreement will set in motion the process of independence of Catalonia. This process will follow a program that will last eighteen months.
