Rósa Björk Brynjólfsdóttir, MP in the Icelandic parliament for the Left-Green Movement, said that the legal proceedings against the Catalan referendum leaders “look like political trials.”

“As a democratic elected member, I’m very worried about these trials” she added in a statement to the Catalan News Agency in front of the Supreme Court in Madrid, where she had come for the proceedings against the Catalan pro-independence leaders.

The MP continued that she thinks “we have to be very aware, that we have to protect freedom of expression and democratic right of people to express themselves and their political views.” She also highlighted the “importance of human rights” in trials “of this kind.”

The politician further reflected on the “condition” Europe is facing, adding that “in the year 2019, these are not the proceedings we would like to see.”
