The World Organisation Against Torture (OMCT) has made public a statement requesting the release of Catalan political prisoners and civic leaders Jordi Cuixart and Jordi Sànchez.

In an open letter addressed to the Spanish president, Pedro Sánchez, to the Attorney General of Spain, María José Segarra, and to the Ombudsman, Francisco Fernández Marugán, they call for the “end of the arbitrary preventive prison” of Cuixart . They also express concern about the preventive prison of Sánchez. The OMCT adds to Amnesty International in their freedom request.

The OMCT condemns the ongoing arbitrary detention and judicial harassment against Mr. Jordi Cuixart and Mr. Jordi Sánchez, which constitute a disproportionate restriction on their fundamental rights to free expression, peaceful assembly and personal liberty. The OMCT further considers that the charges against them are unfounded and must therefore be dropped.
