Two of the five leaders of the political groups of the European Council, the Socialist Andreas Gross, and Tiny Kox, from the United Left, stand out among the signatories of the motion about Catalonia that this organization has just made public. Titled The Situation of Nations without State in Europe, the document urges the assembly of the Council of Europe to address the right to self-determination and the right of Catalonia to decide their political future.

The motion, which will be presented by the Danish Social Democrat deputy Jacob Lund, will be signed by thirty members of the Council, from 19 different European countries and different political groups. And the large majority of signatories are Socialists — the largest group of the Council. There are also three deputies from the European People´s Party and one from the Group of the European Liberals and Democrats.

Of the three Catalan representatives in the European Council, only one has signed the motion, Àlex Sáez, member of the PSC.  Salvador Sedó (UDC) and Jordi Xuclà (CDC)  are also members of this organization.

Soon a ‘Raporteur’ (reporter) will meet with the signatories of the motion and in parallel the groups will  decide at the Council committe whether the debate will move forward. If so, it will take place in autumn 2015 at the plenary assembly of the Council.
